My Name is Cecil
Yesterday in the English speaking tutor class, my teacher Tim and I discussed the topic of names. It was for the IELTS part 1 speaking test, in which the examiner will ask the examinee some general questions including introducing the examinee himself. One question on the past exam paper was, "What's your English name?" My English name is Cecil. Of course, you cannot expect me to get high score if I merely answer like that to the question. So I added something extra to that. My answer was: My name is Cecil. I got this name at the tutor school of English when I was 10 years old. The teacher put several cards each had a name on it in a bag. Then I drew one card randomly which gave me the name "Cecil."
Some of my friends asked why my English name is not Joe since my Chinese name has a word of similar pronounciation to Joe. However, Joe is a mundane name for me. A lot of people worldwide have that name. Compared to Joe, Cecil is more special and unique in Taiwan. Besides, the name Cecil is also a French name with beautiful pronounciation in French. Although the name Cecil in French sounds feminine because it shares the same pronounciation with the girl's name "Cecile", I still like this name.
Next time if you meet me on the street, just call me Cecil. I love my English name.
